Amelanchier alnifolia | Saskatoon Serviceberry thrives as a multi-stemmed shrub in gardens that receive a little afternoon shade during the summer months.  A spring bloomer, the flowers are white and fragrant.  The fruits are dark purple, and taste like blueberries when ripe.  Like blueberries they are loaded with anti-oxidants and can be eaten fresh or made into a delicious jelly. A fantastic native plant, that with a small amount of attention, can be a superior addition to the water wise garden. Serviceberry spreads by underground stems, so annual pruning will keep it attractive and producing fruit.
