Mahonia fremontii | Desert Holly
Desert Holly is an evergreen shrub of the Colorado Plateau that has significant merit as a xeriscape plant for drought tolerant gardens . Bright yellow flowers in early spring are followed by dusty rose-colored fruits that compliment the prickly, holly shaped, gray-blue leaves. In the wild it is very rugged looking, but in the home landscape with a little pruning it is a handsome plant. Desert Holly grows well in average soil with very little water once it is established. An excellent choice for back yard bird habitats because the sharp points of the leaves protect songbirds as they feast upon the fruits.
